1. Withdraw the projection consciously

Next time you feel an intense reaction toward someone, practice the phrase "what I see in them is also in me, somehow." This isn't about denying the other person's behavior, but about no longer spending all your emotional energy judging it externally.

2. Dialogue with the rejected part

Write, in the first person, from the point of view of the trait you reject — as if that part of you could speak. Ask it what it needs, when it first showed up, and what it was trying to protect. This exercise, inspired by Jung's active imagination, reduces the "inner enemy" charge the shadow tends to carry.

3. Express it safely and contained

Shadow impulses (anger, the need for recognition, aggression) don't disappear from being denied — they seek an outlet regardless, often uncontrolled. Find a safe, contained channel: writing, intense physical exercise, a therapeutic space, instead of fully repressing or acting without a filter.

4. Reclaim your golden shadow

Make a list of the qualities you admire most in other people. Ask yourself honestly which of them you could start expressing yourself, even in a modest version. Intense admiration is often an invitation to reclaim something of your own that stayed repressed.

💡 Key Insights
  • Withdrawing the projection doesn't mean ignoring the other person's behavior, just no longer investing all your energy in judging it.
  • Shadow impulses need a safe channel of expression, not just suppression.
  • The golden shadow (repressed positive qualities) needs to be reclaimed, not only the "negative" shadow managed.
